Electric Golf Carts
On a typical round of golf, a golfer will walk about five miles, taking some four hours, during which time he or she will hit the ball somewhere between seventy and a hundred or so times. This makes it necessary to put down and pick up the bag of golf clubs over seventy times, often more, while waiting for partners, and other players in front.
Those of us without access to a caddy to carry the bag for us, used to buy a golf cart, or caddie car, a device consisting of a metal frame, usually folding for easy transport, two wheels and a handle, onto which we strapped the bag of clubs, which seemed to get heavier with each new purchase of equipment or accessories.
This worked well for many years, until sports technologists devoted some time to the physiology of golf, in particular what happens when we pull a heavy cart up a steep part of the course, how tiredness reduces our playing performance and how we can play better if we keep fit in ways other than carrying or pulling golf clubs around.
This, coupled with the fact that many people had to give up the sport because of health conditions relating to the heart, joints etc, led to the development of electric golf carts. These appeared around the 1980s and the first of them were fairly heavy beasts, with big batteries and a limited time between charges.
They have progressed immensely since then, and are now light, powerful and very easy to operate and put away after the game. When choosing one, be aware that some are guaranteed to have sufficient battery life for a full round of golf, others for two rounds. If your golf is such that you have to walk the equivalent of two rounds during each round, you may be better with the more powerful model!
