Coloured Golf Balls
In 1908 Englishman William Taylor patented an inverted bramble pattern which consisted of evenly distributed circular depressions. To the rest of us, he patented the dimple pattern on golf balls.
As well as being aesthetically pleasing, these proved to be aerodynamically efficient and golf balls have been white with dimples on ever since. Different shapes and sizes for the dimples have been tried and discarded and by far the most popular pattern is the original one.
There have been many developments internally, of course, many of them claiming to improve performance so greatly that anyone should be able to drive like a champion.
The only other development cosmetically was the introduction of brightly coloured balls, usually flourescent orange or yellow, for playing in the snow, or in poor light. These served a purpose, of course, and were around for many years. They didn't exactly become everyday items, though, as most of us have the good sense to stay in the clubhouse in the warm when it is snowing.
Finally, someone had the bright idea of making golf balls in many bright colours, first so they were easily seen, and secondly, so they could easily be identified from a distance. If your ball is bright red and you hit it into the rough at the left side of the fairway, and your partner hits a yellow ball into the rough to the right, there can be no doubt whose has gone where.
Or perhaps they are just a fashion accessory........
